‘A LA CARTE’ HARMONICA LESSONS – INTRODUCING A NEW WAY TO LEARN HARMONICA

Harmonica lessons on demand

30-DAY MONEY BACK GUARANTEE ON EACH LESSON!

What is an ‘a la carte’ harmonica lesson?

I am pleased to introduce you to a new way of studying the harmonica: a simple, convenient, and functional method. The lessons are on-demand and available in two versions: digital download only, and digital download plus a scheduled one-to-one lesson.

In these years of teaching, I have known many students and different types of people, and I’m always looking for the best way to help everyone learn by trying to meet their different needs.

From today, you can buy a single harmonica lesson on a specific topic, spending little while making sure you study quality material.

The purpose of this type of lesson is to help you learn the harmonica by resolving your doubts and focusing on a specific topic. For example, did you happen to look for information on what harmonica positions are and how to play them? Perhaps you want to learn some nice songs specifically composed to develop your skills? Or maybe you’re looking for technical exercises? Every aspect of learning harmonica is covered in my lessons.

Now you can safely study with a single, specific course, accompanied by written material, exercises, and audio and video examples. But there’s more! You can also buy the lesson and book a one-to-one video meeting with me at the same time. You’ll receive the material, and we can schedule our video conference to make your study even more effective.

I guarantee this is a terrific way to learn.

Everything is there for you – written lessons to print, videos, audio, and a teacher who will make sure you don’t miss a single bit of knowledge.

Here are some FAQs about the harmonica on-demand lessons:

How long do I have access to the lesson?

After buying a lesson, you have unlimited access to it for as long as you like, across any and all devices you own.

How does this work? What happens once I buy a lesson?

Once you’ve paid for a lesson (you can pay with a credit/debit card or PayPal), you will have immediate access to the lesson material, allowing you to watch and/or download. At the same time, an email will be sent to the address you provided during the purchase. This contains the link to the lesson so that you can access it whenever you like.

Can I receive an invoice or a receipt for my buying?

Yes, in the email you’ll receive, you’ll find a “Generate” button to obtain the invoice.

What happens if I misspell my email when I buy a lesson?

No problem – I will see the delivery error on my dashboard and will fix it, and you can always get in touch with me about any issue. However, once you pay for a lesson, you will still have the possibility to go directly to the material to watch and download it.

What happens when I buy a lesson with a scheduled one-to-one video meeting?

As when you buy the digital version, you’ll have full access to all the study material. I will see your purchase and your email, and will contact you to schedule the lesson. If you don’t receive my email within 48 hours, you can contact me and we’ll arrange it. Keep in mind that my timezone is GMT +1 (Rome, Italy), and I teach from 9am to 7pm local time, Monday to Friday.

How long does a one-to-one video meeting last?

In each lesson description, you’ll find the approximative meeting duration, which I reasonably define by looking at the issue and my experience in teaching it. It might be 30 or 45 minutes. We are not going to focus too much on the watch – our goal is to have you learn what you need.

What if I speak a different language than English?

I speak English, Spanish, French, and Italian. This should be enough for us to study together!

What’s the difference between the free lessons and these paid lessons?

While my free lessons provide valuable knowledge, the paid lessons go more in-depth about specific topics and contain more practical material like audio, video examples, play-along videos, and backing tracks. The learning material can be downloaded to build up your personal learning library.

Can I study with random lessons or would I be better off following a plan?

I’ve managed to organize these lessons in a structured way and have grouped them by difficulty degree. For each lesson, you’ll find a description to clearly understand what you’re going to practice, in which positions you’ll play, and if bending note capability is required. If you follow the listing order, you’ll get the most benefit.

How do I know my actual level to choose the lessons?

Each level section index has a description of what you should be able to do if you want to study lessons of that level.

Beginner - Learn songs of progressive difficulty - Song 1, country ballad
This first song will help beginners get used to playing single notes and long notes with fun.
All the songs I composed in this series of lessons focus on one or more playing aspects and techniques. For this particular practice session, you’ll play single notes and long notes. These are the basics of harmonica learning, and I strongly suggest you dedicate some time to learn how to play with a good tone and precise single-note hitting. For this easy tune, you’ll find many neighboring notes that are easy to play, and beginners will find them comfortable.
In order to get a good tone, you should manage your air intake, so breathing is another focus area in this lesson. Remember to inhale and exhale in a relaxed way – don’t blow or suck. Try to balance the amount of air in your lungs, using your nose as a valve to expel air if you take in too much of it.

Whit this song, we’ll be practicing shakes and double notes on the harmonica. You will perform double notes by widening the embouchure a little on the right, while the shake (also known as warble) is played by alternating two neighboring notes – for example, drawing on holes 4 and 5. In blues songs, you’ll often hear shakes using these holes.

Intermediate - Train Imitation and Train song
Learn the Train Imitation
Learn a Train song
Sooner or later, whoever approaches the study of the harmonica, feels enchanted by the urge to imitate the noise of the train which, fortunately, this instrument can emulate really well.
To skillfully perform this action with a harmonica at a professional level, requires a lot of drills and an investment in the form of a lot of time to become adept in it. Nonetheless, You'll find how I plan to teach you to copy the sound of the train is actually a much simpler way.
First of all, you need to focus on how to imitate discrete sounds of the train one by one, and this is what I suggest for you to do in the next lesson!

The bluegrass song I’ve prepared for you consists of 3 choruses to be played in 2nd position on a G backing track. You’ll notice assimilation of double note combinations in its design; i.e. the bending other than fast licks and the fact that the notes of G pentatonic scale are played here mostly.

Intermediate - Exploring musical styles - Swing song
You'll play the swing song – produced in the key of G – in 2nd position on a C harp. I’ve made use of the G pentatonic scale while designing all four choruses that constitute the tune, moreover, I’ve added some bending notes to it as well; especially to play the note A on hole 3 and A-flat on hole 6 draw.
The harmonic progression shall remain the same for the first two choruses whereas chorus 3 and 4 will have a different chord sequence. In this case, chorus 3 and 4 will work pretty much the same as a ‘bridge’ to connect the song ‘head’, aka the first chorus that shall be repeated at the end of chorus 4.

Intermediate - Exploring musical styles - Rock song
Rock songs, specifically the heavy rock songs are euphonious: i.e. they’re pleasing to your ears, in the minor mode. That’s why I’ve composed this tune to study in D minor to be played in 3rd position on a C harmonica.
I’ve attempted to create some punching lines, using octaves and some rhythmic elements, besides generating several fast licks on the upper instrument side. As observed quite often, meanwhile moving forward whilst the process of composition, the licks tend to get higher and become more articulated; this kind of ‘dosing’ is a great way to initiate a good progression of sound to convey emotions to the listeners in the best possible way.
As for as the notes are concerned, here, we benefit from the ones belonging to the D minor scale with the integration of those linked with the D blues scale.

Intermediate - Exploring musical styles - Pop song
I like to play harmonica in many styles, with pop music or with modern genres to get the advantage of this instrument to its fullest – if you know how to deal with those.
I emulated a singer to create this song, e.g. to assimilate licks; I pretended as if I’m singing over the music. The tune exists in G and we’ll be playing it in 2nd position on a ‘C’ harp.
Here we’ll make use of the G major scale besides pentatonic. Usually, I play additional notes to vocalize some chromatic passages.

Intermediate - Exploring musical styles - Country song
Various styles constitute the really big family of Country music. The song I’ll introduce to you in this course is kind of a tune with the sensation of ‘relaxed feeling’, to be played in 1st position on a C major chord progression. I’ve used a typical chord sequence, keeping it simple and funny.
Playing in 1st position allows us to take benefit of all the notes of the C major scale, and we already know that all these notes are present in the central portion of the instrument. When, during a song, we play on the lower side of the harp, i.e. holes 1 to 4; we need to bend a couple of holes to get two notes: the A and the F. The former is available on hole 3 with a whole-tone bending, whereas ‘F’ can be found on hole 2 – with double-step bending too.
The song is composed of three choruses and although the first two are similar, in terms of chord progression, the third one is different.

Intermediate - Exploring musical styles - Reggae song
This Reggae song is composed of three choruses. It is played in 5th position with a C harmonica, on an E minor backing track. The fifth position is effective at least as much as the 3rd position when performing minor tunes. In this song, you’ll practice some quick phrasing, a little bit of bending, but the most of the performance will emphasize on timing. The rhythm is the real Reggae trademark.

Intermediate - 10 Chugging exercises, playing chords and more complex melodies
In the coming 10 exercises, several single notes will be inserted between the chords. The resulting patterns would be more complex and the sound would become more skilled. To carry out these exercises, we'll apply common tongue blocking techniques like slaps and pulls. If you face any difficulty in conducting these special elocutions, don't lose heart, just keep playing the way you possibly can listen carefully to how it sounds like when I execute them and follow my footsteps.

Intermediate / Upper Intermediate Speed and precision development exercises 01-04
This lesson is based on a concept of deliberate practice – practicing something while keeping in mind the goal we want to achieve and the benefits this specific practice brings. For this kind of exercise, I wanted to create chord progressions on which to play, making the practice more fun and contextualized in terms of execution. This way, not only will you improve your technical skills on the harmonica, but at the same time will become a more conscious musician, since the exercises have the form of small pieces of music. You could say we’re studying a hybrid model of practice, a cross between a short song and a technical dictation.
Each study is composed of 8 measures, so you’ll learn not only a bounce of licks but also some really small pieces in which you’ll manage to play for a fair amount of time, developing your focusing capabilities.
